Allotoca catarinae

English name:
Green Allotoca

Text by JAN DE MOREE, Netherlands (2001)

This species is clearly physically distinct from all other Allotoca species. The size of 4 to 6 cm is relatively small. Nevertheless, we found an extraordinarily huge specimen of about 15 cm. That place of discovery was close to the town of Uruapan in a marshland that is endangered by human activity.

The animals are golden with a dark back and - this is the most distinguishing feature - a number of vertical spots spread over the entire body. Allotoca catarinae is a robust fish that does not eat a lot yet eats anything.
